A heart attack occurs when heart muscle tissue dies because it's blood supply is severely reduced or stopped. This often occurs because of a clot in one or more coronary arteries. If damage to the heart muscle is too severe, the victim's heart can stop beating-a condition called cardiac arrest. Sudden cardiac arrest is a leading cause of death in the United States, affecting about 250,000 people yearly in out of hospital locations.
Few victims experiencing sudden cardiac arrest outside of a hospital survive unless a rapid sequence of events takes place. The "Chain of Survival" is a way of describing the ideal sequence of care that should take place when a cardiac arrest occurs.
